Filled-Duration Illusions

چکیده
Abstract Data relevant to the ‘filled-duration illusion’, claim that filled intervals appear last longer than unfilled ones of same real duration, are reviewed. A distinction is made between divided-time studies (where an empty interval has one or more brief dividing stimulus inside it) and filled-duration with some continuous event). Divided durations ones, effect grows number dividers, although it may be restricted short durations. The best current explanation appears involve weighted summation different subintervals which total duration composed. When simple fillers contrasted they usually judged as longer, grow lengthen, at least over ranges. complex used, have no on perceived shorten it. pacemaker-counter approach can account for filler effects, division attention effects. Although there exceptions, ‘filled-interval illusions’ all these types normally found, but problems, such questions about relative variability intervals, order merit further research.

Internal clock processes and the filled-duration illusion.
In 3 experiments, the authors compared duration judgments of filled stimuli (tones) with unfilled ones (intervals defined by clicks or gaps in tones). Temporal generalization procedures (Experiment 1) and verbal estimation procedures (Experiments 2 and 3) all showed that subjective durations of the tones were considerably longer than those of unfilled intervals defined either by clicks or gaps,...
متن کاملAn Electroencephalographic Investigation of the Filled-Duration Illusion
The study investigated how the brain activity changed when participants were engaged in a temporal production task known as the "filled-duration illusion." Twelve right-handed participants were asked to memorize and reproduce the duration of time intervals (600 or 800 ms) bounded by two flashes. Random trials contained auditory stimuli in the form of three 20 ms sounds between the flashes. In o...
متن کاملA neural hierarchy for illusions of time: duration adaptation precedes multisensory integration.
Perceived time is inherently malleable. For example, adaptation to relatively long or short sensory events leads to a repulsive aftereffect such that subsequent events appear to be contracted or expanded (duration adaptation). Perceived visual duration can also be distorted via concurrent presentation of discrepant auditory durations (multisensory integration). The neural loci of both distortio...
متن کاملOverdistribution Illusions
Overdistribution is a form of memory distortion in which an event is remembered as belonging to too many episodic states, states that are logically or empirically incompatible with each other. We investigated a response formatting method of suppressing 2 basic types of overdistribution, disjunction and conjunction illusions, which parallel some classic illusions in the judgment and decision mak...
